From time to time, we all need an informal place to drop in, grab a quick cuppa and unload the brain with a swift post, hence the opening of the Club Room where we can do just that. From random thoughts, timely reminders, quick questions, or a funny story, just put the kettle on, open the biscuit tin (bring more Hobnobs please guys, I have an addiction, although SuperU do a brill copy of McVities Chocky digestive) and share that thought!
Comfy chairs are at the ready . . .

While thinking baseboards, I’ve pondered back scenes and their need also to be planned at the early stage in order to best coordinate with scenery and structures. My brain then wandered onto diminishing lines of perspective and scale. So here is my question: has anyone used diminishing scale as a modelling technique between the main operating features of the layout and the backboard scene?
I want to investigate this issue and incorporate some techniques into my new layout. I’m thinking in terms of incorporating smaller scale people, vehicles, vegetation and buildings. Perhaps a winding road of diminishing width, some N gauge items, possibly structures with decreasing dimensions?
Experience, suggestions and comments will always be welcomed. Cheers m’dears,
Bill

Great idea Bill! I can feel the warmth of the pot-bellied stove already. I really like the way you have 'seeded' a new discussion.
I have a reply to your question on perspective which I will post in a new Board in "Tools, Techniques and Technical Stuff" called "Perspective and Scale on the layout". I can change this title later if you have an idea for a better one.
Your message has been a great help from an Admin standpoint and, as a result, I have added additional information to the "Navigating the Forum" announcement, and to the description of the "General Board" to the effect that you can propose new discussions (Boards) there.
If you want Guests and Members to be able to see your post about Le Club Room when navigating: "The new function in question is: If you now hover over Anglo French Railway Modellers in the white header bar, you can see all the Categories and Boards and you will be able to go directly to them without having to scroll. It also shows where you visited last in Bold." Then I will create a new Board, within the General Category called "Le Club Room". Let me know if you would like me to do this.
Thanks again, All the best John

'Stokes the wood burner' Just realised it's almost the weekend, so don't forget the card, flowers and extra surprise treats for you know who this weekend. I might risk telling the bride on our Saturday night date, that I'm off to Normandy on Monday with a trailer to fetch her special gift, if I'm brave that is. It really is 'special' though, a 'Citroen 2CV Special' in fact and I should be able to get it up and running in a couple of weeks Any surprises in store at chez vous? Bill PS Who ate the Hobnobs and left Rich Tea?

No surprises this St Valentines as we are both laid up with the dreaded lurgy. Saved a few bob though.

Oh no, not the lurgy and the dreaded variety to boot! Get better soon, the pair of you and come back to the land of the living and convivial surprises.
Bonne sante,
Bill

Hi Dieter and Co,
Sorry to hear of your indisposition, but have to appreciate your deeply philosophical and pragmatic approach to your dilemma (can't find a smiley for 'tongue-in-cheek')
All the best John
ps: off to visit the Limoges railway modellers club tonight, hoping for some useful info on exhibitions, etc.

I bought a Ratio signal box in the UK recently and when sorting though a box of railway stuff in the workshop, what should I find, but a half completed signal box kit, started some 30 years ago and it's the Ratio one! I'll play spot the difference when I finish it off and to make it even better, I've just ordered an interior detailing kit off eBay. It's even got a comfy chair!
Happy modelling

I have just received my copy of the MIBA catalogue of the Nuremburg show. This show is the largest new products show in Europe and all the manufacturers exhibit their new products for 2015. The majority of items are Continental but Hornby did have a stand there with the BR blue 60163 Tornado and Pullman coaches, I must admit they look pretty good. I just had one thought looking through the new releases now there only a handful of loco manufacturers in Europe, Vossloh, Bombardier, Alstom and Siemens the classes of loco's that in future years will be modelled will be fairly small and across Europe we will only see different Rail Leasing Companies liveries. For me part of the attraction of Railway modelling is finding and running models that are not the norm. Also just seen the Model Rail magazine pictures of Scotrail and that looks like a show to visit if possible.

With the wind rattling about outside, I'm determined to make my railway den cosy and warm and may look for a little wood burning stove on leboncoin, but not before I insulate the walls and roof. Apart from necessities such as water tightness and warmth, I'll be putting in a comfy chair and hanging some prints, including an original framed carriage poster and some wagon plates. What goodies would you guys like to hang in your railway den?

Hi Bill,
I like the idea of a wood-burner, really cozy, and an armchair - oh yes! I don't really have room for that set up in my shed, but I am looking for a tall bar-stool so that I can at least sit down whilst working on my trains. One little luxury I will be adding though -- some dear friends have been sending me the Salmon Calendar of Vintage Railway Posters for the past few years, the A4-sized posters will look great just above the backscene.
Keep 'em coming Bill, I am all for having a little comfort in addition to a lot of pleasure in my modelling.
All the best John

I'm with both you guys Bill and John, going to put up posters and pictures when the rooms walls are fettled. I've also aquired a glass display cabinet that was the top part of a french sideboard, so i'll at last have somewhere to display " Things " not decided what these will be yet as it's a new option. Cant have a fire though as i'm sharing the space with a large chest freezer, at least the former ' cave ' is a step up being inside the house for me as opposed to the wooden shed!! Now I hope when i post this my photo will come up!!! It was a task as everything i tried was to big.........

Hi Richard, I like the idea of your display cabinet and actually have a couple in the office full of old model cars! Your new profile photo is truly magnificent and reminds me the huge grimy locos hissing and waiting to work, as I walked past them in Lime Street Station, Liverpool as a very small boy. A distant and happy memory! Time for a cuppa, see you soon, Bill

I must stress that this is me NOT having a rant, just realising after looking in a closed model shop window in Angers today, how remarkably very expensive it is for the poor HO railway modeller in France. The cheapest new loco in the large window display (a small modern outline) was 189€, while many others were almost 300€! Zut alors, I'll never complain at Bachmann prices, but then again I never have and I certainly wont feel quite so guilty spending just over a £100 on the September release of the GWR shirt button logo'd Earl Non-rant over and I'm looking forward to my UK visit next week to see my mum and buy more tea and railways. Onwards and upwards. Speak soon me hearties Bill

It's good to be back and the latest edition of the Railway Modeller I picked up, told me of an exhibition next weekend just a stones throw from where I was staying, rats! Anyway, a successful trip and I did something unexpected and bought a train set! A Bachmann set containing a rare liveried loco, brake van and shunter's truck, while the oval of track and controller makes an excellent running in facility.
Not much activity at the mo I see, so hope you are all well. I seem to have attracted another dose of the lurgy. Must be the cross channel ferry!
Speak soon,
Bill
