Hi all,
as you may already know, the inaugural meeting of the AFRM was held in November last in Javerlhac 24300 and as we are a new group I think we are due to have another meeting as soon as possible to allow members to get to know each other and swap stories, ideas and info etc.
Given the fact that members come from all parts of Dordogne (and beyond) it is difficult to choose a venue and date to suit everyone. However, the initial meeting was attended by myself, Dieter and Brian and as we were not sure if the group would get off the ground we decided at that time to hold the next meeting in Nontron 24300.
I propose to hold a meeting on this coming Saturday 11th January, at the Trotters Bar in the centre of Nontron just beside the Mairie and Hotel Grand Pellison @ 15.00 hrs. There is ample parking beside the bar and if the weather stays as good as it has been here for the last few days we can sit outside.
Feel free to bring family members along and any friends or neighbours who might be interested including your French neighbours.
I apologise for giving such short notice but I will be having a hip operation soon and will be confined to bed for a while. I will therefore be indisposed from January 15th to the end of February. I will be able to respond to emails and keep an eye on the forum but obviously I won't be able to travel.
I have tried to create a map showing where all members come from but despite asking several times for the Town name and Postcode for each member I have had a poor response. I have also emailed members informing them not to use the Google group any more but they still email me. Hopefully we can solve these issues at the meeting.
The meeting will be informal but I propose to discuss the following points
1 get the locations of each member in order to facilitate meetings, day-trips and get-togethers etc. And, confirm email addresses
2 discuss suggestions for the forum i.e. how to improve it and what would you like to see on it or removed from it
3 discuss the future of the group to see if we should continue and what we want to achieve
4 organise day-trips to visit members to see their layouts or collections
5 suggestions for a membership badge/ID card so we can possibly negotiate discounts from suppliers
6 organise a swap meet for the Springtime and allow members to sell or trade surplus items and to generate more interest in the group/club
7 discuss the possibility of a club stand at vide greniers and local events, again, to sell surplus items and to advertise the group
8 organise workshops whereby members can give talks about scratch building, wiring, signaling, best types of wood for baseboards etc.
9 elect an informal committee to organise things
okay, last but not least, I would like to include the following topics for a separate discussion:-
Fund raising, discuss the possibility of a small information booklet or pamphlet for the club and see if we can get some advertisers
Visits to other clubs, groups and exhibitions. I'd like to see members traveling to these events to advertise our club and to broaden their minds especially anyone who has never been a member of a model railway club to see what can be achieved.
Donations, I am totally anti-fee-paying membership for anyone to join the club but I'd like to discuss the possibility of members donating surplus items to sell at vide greniers and other events for the benefit of the club in order to pay fuel and lunch costs for any members who attend a vide grenier or event to promote the club.
Bespoke layouts. This is something we could do any time of the year but we could make an effort and get together to make a few small (6x3) layouts to sell around next Christmas with the proceeds going to the general fund. This is also an excellent way for beginners to learn how to build a layout.
Club T-shirts, mugs, fridge magnets, keyrings and other such promotional ideas both for ourselves and the club.
I propose to have the follow up meeting at Perigueux sometime in March to facilitate members from south Dordogne.
Okay that's enough for now, happy New Year to you all and I look forward to seeing you next Saturday.
By the way, if you have something to sell why not bring it along to the meeting (you'll have a captive audience!!)
