Hi all, I too have managed to join the forum after some fiddling about mainly due to not being computer literate enough. I have only one very old truck so need virtually everything to make up a layout. I would like to go down the DCC route but have to start somewhere so if any of you have bits and pieces to move on please let me know. My interest is fifties into sixties and I hope to scratch build as much as possible. Thanks to Berty for all his hard work, Best wishes Brian

Hi all, whilst looking for some soundproofing materials in Bricomarche I have found some useful cork underlay. It comes in 8 metre by 0.5 m roll for €33 which is much cheaper than model shop prices. French name for cork is liege.

Hi all, I have just come back from the UK with a load of bits and pieces for my new layout. I ordered from Hattons and got it sent to a UK address so it only cost £4 for delivery! I have got a couple of track settas ,one 21 and one18 inch radius,oo guage, and as it will be some time before I get building if anyone would like to borrow them just give me a call. Hattons have some good offers on regulary so it is worth keeping an eye on their web site. Anyway wake up all you forum members and post something to keep us interested! Best wishes Brian

Hi all, I have started my new layout at last. After pricing up the timber I decided more thought was needed! The cost was going to be over €100 just for the frame so after a lot of thought I decided to use the metal channel that is normally used for putting up plasterboard. It is cheap and I got all I required for €16, which is a great saving. The top board is plywood (10mm). The frame went together rather like a car chassis, which I have some experience of, but I used rivets rather than crimping the joints. I felt that it would be stronger that way. I then used large headed rivets the fasten the top in place. This was hard work but worth it. The result is a very stiff but light structure at a fraction of the cost of a timber baseboard. Before I fastened the top in place I rested the frame on it and drew around the metalwork. This way when it came to fixing the point motors I knew where any obstruction would be. Obviously it was important to get the framework square and the cross pieces evenly spaced because when the board is placed on top of the frame it is reversed. You will see from the photos why it had to be done this way. Disadvantages of my way include having to cope with large headed rivets when laying the track but countersinking or cutting a clearance hole in the cork works. i have now laid the track and am about to start electrical testing before finally fixing down approx. 13.5 m of track, the board is approx 3m x 1.2m. I hope I can get it into the house from my workshop! i will post again when more has been achieved . i seem not to be able to include photos, so if you would like to see them, email me please.

Hi all, my layout is era 5 ( mid50s to mid 60s approx) and is 00 based. I will post photos when I get a chance. Today I picked up a box full of bits and pieces including locos, rolling stock and buildings all manufactured in that era. I will be sorting through my acquisitions soon I hope but as most need attention I will have lots of fun.

Hi all, I have now emptied the boxes of bits and pieces! I seem to have acquired around 25 items of rolling stock, six locos ( three of which are only good for static display) and some buildings as well as a load of old track in a rusty condition. Two of the locos which are runners are interesting. One is a Lima class 33 Bo Bo probably HO scale and the other is a class 37 Deltic made by Hornby. More than likely these will be for sale when serviced. I am working on a Stanier 4-6-0 Black 5 which looks promising and there is a Triang TR 2335 in bits and a 3car Pullman set with an observation car which may well be scrapped. I have not taken any photos yet but will do soon I hope. Best wishes Brian

Hi Brian, it's always interesting sorting through job lots and you seem to have some useful items to use or sell on. Well done and good luck with the Black 5.
I'm still playing about with my layout plan, as I want to incorporate a turntable, which is prototypical even for small branch lines and gives me the means to run more tender passenger locos.
Speak soon,
Bill

Hi Bill, Hope your layout plans are going well? Will post to your layout thread with something possibly useful. Might be a help to Brian as well, although he has already laid his track. The link is to AnyRail layout design software: www.anyrail.com/index_en.htmlAll the best John

Hi all, I am back in the land of the living and recovered enough to move my baseboard complete with electrics from the workshop to its position in the house. I have only a few dents in the ceiling and some scrapes on the door frames to repair! I probably won't be doing any more until the end of the summer when all the visitors have left. I am pleased that the forum is still ticking over now the better weather is allowing less time for members to get involved. Keep posting, Brian

Hi Richard, You will be welcome anytime you are in the area. Visitors don't start until mid July but if I am here I would be pleased to see you anyway. I have been in for an operation for an ongoing problem, not long in hospital but a fairly lengthy recovery. Almost back to normal now thank goodness. Look forward to seeing you, Brian

Hi Brian and welcome back. Sorry to hear that you've had a spell in hospital and a long recovery, but I'm very pleased you are at last doing well and even moved your layout.
We also have a season of visitors and I've been putting up a new pool today and now can relax with a beer while it fills over the next few hours.
Very quiet here, despite the good weather, so I've been making myself at home over on yourmodelrailway.net/index.php where we have members from all over the globe, including a fair few from France and there is a wealth of experience and good ideas and good banter to boot. Come and say bonjour if you wish and you'll find me with the same username and I've posted a lot more about my new layout.
I'll pop in again soon. All the best,
Bill

Hi Bill, Thanks for your good wishes. I can't see me managing to do much on the layout before the winter but one never knows. I try not to look at the bits and peices awaiting my attention to save getting frustrated! I think we all suffer from the lack of time due to the house, garden and visitors but come the end of summer things might change. Best wishes to all, Brian
