Why is anything to do with railway modelling SO expensive in France?? Even a magazine is half the price of a bottle of whisky, and a trip to a model shop in Bordeaux left me gasping with shock....the equivalent of £14 for a plastic bag of Woodland Scenic 'foliage'....
I got the impression that in France it is a hobby for very rich people who want to buy ludicrously expensive models and accessories 'ready to plant' and not REAL modellers. For heavens sake, they are modelling in the world's most popular HO scale, not the U.K.'s iconoclastic 1/76th - OO system, which if global market forces dictated would be more expensive. There are 3 million HO modellers in the U.S.A. alone, before you consider all the European modellers in a continent where one train can pass through Belgium, France, Switzerland and Germany...

This is what has put me off modelling a French branch line-even secondhand, in poor condition, everything costs a lot. Haven't seen any expos advertised any where near here.

Regarding the cost of models in France it is possible to buy Fleischmann and Roco French outline models on Ebay UK and even including the cost of postage it works out cheaper than buying in France. I went to an exhibition in Limoges last year and the prices for second hand items was silly, even for very poor damaged items. I have found that it is sometimes cheaper to buy new direct from UK suppliers than from French retailers. One point to note that Fleischman and Roco locos are not cheap a new steam loco with DCC and sound can cost upwards of £400.
