I see SNCF engineers have red faces over their new trains being too wide and now thousands of platforms have to be 'adjusted to fit'. Oops (ooh la la style) See the BBC news article about it here www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27497727Berty

Read about this in the paper yesterday they think it will cost between 50m euros and 400m euros to adapt about 1600 platforms, but SNCF state that ticket prices may have to rise to fund the works. The new trains are very nice though.

It's not SNCF that should have red faces, but RFF (Réseau Ferréé de France), since they are responsible for the infrastructure and provided the wrong dimensions. However, it also has to be asked why Alstom and Bombadier didn't query the sudden increase in loading gauge when they received the spec since both should be well used to building trains that do fit. Certainly any of the contractors I was used to dealing with in my professional life would at least have passed the odd remark, which might have brought the discrepancy to light before the whole of the £2.4BN had been spent - but perhaps they were just used to Government Departments making that sort of mistake.

Even the GW R did it, one or two curved station edges had to be trimmed when the large Prairie enteres service.
