Hi guys,
After much research and planning the layout proposal below has gradually been developed:
It represents the branch terminus in a busy market town in the GWR region set between the mid 1920s to late 1930s. The changing faces of both rail and road transport will be reflected, while the layout will operate on DC, with remote point control using mechanical linkages, thus keeping in touch with prototype operation.
The inclusion of a turntable is partly to do with my fascination for the things ever since discovering a turntable pit as a lad in Tavistock. Fortunately, they were seen in some branch termini and add good operational interest and I'll be looking to motorise it, hopefully as silently as possible.
The next stage is in getting the railway room ready, which requires some building work, all easy enough and enjoyable, so more as it happens.
TTFN,
Bill

Looking good Bill!
The layout design appears to give you great freedom to develop landscape and scenic detail (more so than mine does), I am looking forward to seeing the fruits of your building work and your recent reading.
Memory check - are you modelling in 00? Question, what are the approximate overall dimensions of the layout?
I used the Peco turntable with a motor and gearbox recommended online, I think it was via Frizinghall Model Railways, and I have found that, although the setup is accurate enough when geared correctly, it is also very noisy and quite distracting. If you find a quite solution to the motorizing issue please do let me know.
Good luck with the building work - I still have a little more to do in that field, also achievable more comfortably now that I am recovering from recent renovation aches and pains.
All the best John

Hi John,
Yes, it's OO gauge in 4mm and the overall length will only be decided when I do a full scale set out using the Peco point templates and some coaches to determine platform length. Space in the railway room isn't a big issue, but it will probably run to between 3 and 4 metres, plus the fiddle.
The turntable will be the typical GWR above deck beam structure and the available brass etched kits are around £250, so I'm looking at all the available manufacturers and will modify to suit. Strangely enough, the really cheap Dapol kit resembles the GWR type. The amount of work to modify and motorise with a decent gearbox and motor presents an interesting challenge and will form a good little project to document.
I'm preparing now for the utility room build, which starts in earnest in a week's time. After that's done, I'll start in earnest on the railway room, so will be looking to build base boards towards the end of the summer. We're pretty busy with guests here from June to the end of September and I've a couple of car projects to push on with as well. All those people who say retirement means plenty of time to do just whatever you want, must have limited imaginations!
TTFN and happy modelling,
Bill

Hi guys,
The summer is keeping most of us busy enjoying life elsewhere, myself included, but just thought I'd check in and see what's what. No more progress on the railway room, although the utility room is 70% complete, but the plasterer has gone off for his two weeks holiday, so no more electrics can take place before the skim coat goes on! Never mind, as I've build a deck, put in two water butts and have been restocking my railway library and coaching stock from the 20s and 30s period.
Enjoy the fabulous summer and I'm sure we'll catch up with some more frequent posts in a couple of months.
Cheers m'dears,
Bill

Hi longchap, good to hear that you are making progress. We too have been swamped by visitors but today I bought the timber to build a new extra workbench to enable me to lay stuff out. Hopefully at the end of summer I will be able to get some work done on the layout but in the meantime there are jobs to be done. The forum should pick up again soon as the weather changes. best wishes, Brian
